Baby Week Leeds

Monday, September 12th, 2016

Today marks the start of Baby Week Leeds, which runs from the 12th to the 16th of September 2016. Based on the Semana do Bebe (the week of the baby) model in Brazil, this event is an Early Years initiative aiming to raise awareness of the critical growth stages of a baby’s life.

There are many events for professionals, parents, and babies taking place throughout the city during the week. The timetable can be found here and includes interactive activities such as sensory storytelling time and baby massage sessions at locations including Chapeltown Children’s centre and Kirkstall Children’s Centre.

Following the closing ceremony at Leeds Civic Hall on Friday, there will be a pram push around Millennium Square at 3pm. Fingers crossed for some good Yorkshire weather!

For more information, (and to register for events) visit the Baby Week website, and for daily updates search for #BabyWeek on Twitter.

#shopsbs is launched, and Chiggs’s cards will float your boat.

It was a few years ago now, but some of you may remember when Chiggs was retweeted on twitter by Theo Paphitis (of Dragon’s Den fame) when he chose us as a winner of his Small Business Sunday (‪#‎SBS‬) initiative.

#SBS

It was a huge honour, and last year I attended one of the yearly SBS events with some other Harrogate based business owners. The exciting announcement at this year’s event was the development of an SBS shop, and now it has been launched! It is to showcase the products of the businesses who have won #SBS and Chiggs is delighted to be included.

If you are looking for a ‘New Baby’ card that the new parents will be delighted to receive, or for a Get Well Soon card with a useful twist, Chiggs Baby Feed Wheels and Get Well Wheels are here on the SBS shop.

Have a look around, there are some lovely items!

It’s a (Royal Baby) Girl!

Saturday, May 2nd, 2015

Congratulations William and Catherine, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge!

Kensington Palace has announced that “Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a daughter at 8.34am. The baby weighs 8lbs 3oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth.

The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well. Follow @KensingtonRoyal on Twitter for further updates”

If you are welcoming any new additions to your family today the Royal Social Media pages would love to hear from you. Post a picture to the Twitter account @KensingtonRoyal,  or Instagram at KensingtonRoyal, using the hashtag ‪#‎WelcomeToTheFamily‬ and  your post could be included in their social media blog on Storify!

Of course, speculation now surrounds the name for the new Princess. I think Charlotte, Chiglet has gone for Claire (bit left field, that one!) and Mr Chiggs thinks Victoria. Either way, we will be sending a pink Baby Feed Wheel for Kate to help her keep track of her baby girl’s feeding times!

#SBS winners event

Sunday, February 15th, 2015

On Friday January the 30th I went to Birmingham to attend the Small Business Sunday winners event. I’ve mentioned #SBS before, back in November 2010 when Chiggs had the great honour to be chosen for a retweet on Twitter by entrepeneur and former dragon, Theo Paphitis. Chiggs SBS badge

Small Business Sunday continues, and has grown and grown since Chiggs was a winner- now businesses can tweet their details to Theo every Sunday Evening between  5 – 7.30pm,  and he retwees his favourite 6 companies on Monday evening at 8pm. As you can imagine, there are a lot of winners now, enough for an entire networking event to be organised! There have been 2 previous events, but I was unable to attend them due to childcare issues so I was really thrilled to be able to make this one!

What an inspiring day it was! Theo gave a talk in the morning and there was a question and answer session in the afternoon.

I was able to finally pick up my winners certificate- the only disappointment of the day was that the queue to have a photo taken with your certificate and with Theo himself was so long that I ran out of time before I had to head back up to North Yorkshire to take over childcare duties from my husband before he headed off to work a night shift- once again the perils of running a business around a family!! Ah, well, never mind- this photo shows the closest I was able to get to Mr Paphitis….

National Thinking of You Week

Thursday, September 18th, 2014

The GCA (Greeting Card Association) has launched a new special week to highlight the emotional power of sending and receiving greeting cards- and it’s happening soon!

National Thinking of You Week has the aim of spreading a little bit of love and happiness across the nation by getting everyone to send a card a day during the week of 22-28th of September 2014.

To get involved you just have to send seven cards during this week, and encourage friends, family and colleagues to do the same.

Cards don’t have to be posted! You can give them in person or pop one through a neighbours letter box. The GCA points out that it has been scientifically proven that receiving a handwritten card makes people feel much more special than getting a text or email.

So, if you know someone who has just found out they are expecting a baby (looking at you, Your Majesty!) send them a lemon Baby Feed Wheel from Chiggs.

Maybe a friend or relative has just had a baby? A blue or pink Baby Feed Wheel would be a lovely card to congratulate them with (or both if it’s twins!)

Or you may know someone who is a bit under the weather at the moment- maybe they have a cold coming on- give them a Get Well Wheel and you’re not only letting them know you are thinking of them, but they can even use the card to keep a track of their Beechams!

Pop into one of our stockists, buy a Chiggs Wheel, write a little message on the back and spread a little happiness next week! Look out for photos and events posted on Facebook and Twitter with hashtags #ThinkingOfYou, and #KeepBritainHappy

Baby Feed Wheel reviews

Sunday, October 20th, 2013

There are some fabulous reviews of Baby Feed Wheels dotted around the web, so we’ve tried to bring as many as we can find all together in one place.

On Amazon the Pink Baby Feed Wheel was given 5 stars, with the reviewer noting that the couple she bought it for use it, so although given as a card, it’s useful too.

A blue Baby Feed Wheel was purchased to add to a new baby hamper, the reviewer said “It’s a simple idea but based on how frazzled I have seen new parents get, seems like an essential!”

On Mumsnet reviews, under ‘Gifts for New Parents’ the Baby Feed Wheel is awarded a whopping 5 stars out of 5 over 6 reviews with comments “This is great for any new mum… I used it especially after the birth of my daughter when I was really tired from all the sleepless nights & sleep deprivation.”

and “This is such a simple idea but absolutely fantastic. I thought it would be pointless ‘I’ll remember when I last fed her’ were my poor innocent pre-birth thoughts. And then the reality of life with a newborn kicked in and this really came into its own at night – def recommended! ”

On Bizziebaby where Lisa awarded the Baby Feed Wheel 5 out of 5, saying  “Quality is superb.  Extremely good value for money and would consider buying more and also as a gift.  Would recommend without hesitation.”

On the Chiggs website we have some lovely testimonials that people have sent us over the years by letter (remember those?!), email, and on Twitter and Facebook – “Can’t tell you how much these wheels helped our sanity when we had the twins! Simple but so effective – like all the best ideas!”

and… “We put the feeding wheel to immediate excellent use. It was a godsend in those early days when most of your brain has deserted you and remembering such a simple thing is beyond you! It’s a fantastic product and we have recommended it to many. Thanks.”… to quote just two!

#SBS winners event is planned

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

I posted on this blog way back in November 2010 when Chiggs was chosen by Dragon Theo Paphitis for a retweet on Twitter with the #sbs hashtag for Small Business Sunday. It was a very exciting moment for Chiggs, so lovely that someone with the status of Theo will spend time promoting and supporting small businesses like us.

It seems that the excitement may well be set to continue, as Mr Paphitis has announced that  there will be an event for all the businesses he chose as SBS winners to get together and network, to be held at Edgbaston Stadium on March the 30th. I’m very much hoping to attend, and will let you know how it goes! www.twitter.com/ChiggsHQ

It’s hip to be square

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

The Harrogate Home and Gift trade Show is over for another year. It ran from the 17th to the 20th of July, filling the whole of the International Conference Centre (and much more besides!). I’ve been attending as a visitor for the last 5 years, since I started with Chiggs, and this year seemed to be the biggest ever- they keep finding subterranean halls to open and fill with exhibitors, and I think now the whole of the underground car park has been turned into exhibitor space. I’m sure that the vast majority of residents of Harrogate have no idea about the acres of space, bustling with people, under Kings Road!

Many local hotels are also used for the Home and Gift Show, with The Cairn hosting Gitware exhibitors, and The Majestic having ‘gifts for Men’ in the hotel, a rather wonderful jazz band playing on the terrace, and its grounds filled with semi-permanent ‘marquees’ (that word doesn’t do them justice, they are better built than my first house was!)

I went to meet some Twitter friends who run businesses exhibiting there, to browse businesses supplying products Chiggs need to purchase to make our business run smoothly (display units, stationery, packaging, embellishments etc ) and to check out the trends in the greeting card and gift market (if  ‘bunting’ is the new ‘cupcakes’ I wonder what the new ‘bunting’ will be?!)

Another trend that struck me is ‘square’ greeting cards. Now, I didn’t set out to design only square cards, the dial that makes the cards so useful and unique, in many ways, dictated the size and shape of Chiggs Wheels.  While some greeting card publishers have a variety of shapes and sizes in their ranges (including a few square cards), I noticed a few companies exhibiting at this year’s trade show whose entire range was square. It’s hip to be square!

More info:-Chiggs Wheels are approx 13cm x 13cm square, supplied with a white envelope and sealed in a cellophane wrapper with a printed insert. They are available to buy from the Chiggs online shop, from a variety of independent retailers, and at trade and wholesale rates exclusively from Chiggs.

Independents Day – Your high street needs you!

Monday, June 13th, 2011

We all know it’s tough out there in retail-land, and it seems that people are becoming worried about the plight of independent retailers on the UK High Street. Here in Harrogate we have recently lost another of the small, independent gift shops that makes this town different from the identikit-High-Streets with the closure of Lemontree. This is a particularly sad closure for Chiggs since the owners of Lemontree have been selling Chiggs Wheels for many years, and over that time they have also become friends.

On a happier note, I’ve recently come across a couple of initiatives aimed at helping Britains Independent retailers:-

Independents Day scheduled for the 4th of July (get it?!) is a national campaign to “support your local independent retailer” whereby “the public will be encouraged to buy at least one item from a local independent retailer and celebrate diversity on the high street.” Easy for Chiggs as we practice what we preach and always support our local shops, particularly our local stockists! They have a twitter account at www.twitter.com/Retail_IndieDay and a facebook page http://www.facebook.com/Independentsday if you would like to get involved.

A second initiative is Independent Retailer Month, July 2011 ( http://www.independentretailermonth.co.uk/ )which has 3 aims:-

to encourage consumers to celebrate their fave independent retailers,

to encourage independent retailers to create a ‘buzz’ in July, and

(this is the Chiggs bit!) encouraging suppliers and all those who service the independent retail sector to spread the word. (I think I can tick this one off with this blog post!)

There are still ongoing initiatives like the Theo Paphitis Small Business Sunday on Twitter #SBS where famous Dragon Theo chooses 6 small businesses to retweet to all his followers every Sunday. Chiggs was lucky enough to be retweeted last year (as gleefully blogged about here which was a wonderful boost to our business.

So, as the saying goes, if you want to save the High Street- vote with your feet! If you like to shop local, look no further than the lovely independent shops who sell Chiggs Wheels 🙂

SBS- special boat squad? No- Small Business Sunday!

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Dragons Den stalwart (and, may we say, our very favourite Dragon) Theo Paphitis has been running a weekly initiative on twitter called #sbs. The hashtag on Twitter is a way of following a conversation between lots of Tweeple about a certain subject- in this case the subject is Small Business Sunday.

Every Sunday small businesses from all over the UK post a little bit of info about their business including the #sbs hashtag, and on Sunday evening Theo Paphitis picks just 5 of the businesses he likes the look of, and retweets to all his followers (62,763 at last count!).

And guess what?! This Sunday Theo chose to retweet about Chiggs! Excited and thrilled doesn’t cover it- I’ve had lovely messages from other people congratulating me on the mention, and the number of people visiting the Chiggs website went through the roof! I’m so proud that a businessman like Mr Paphitis thought Chiggs worthy of a plug 🙂

So here it is, in all it’s glory- my original Tweet, as retweeted by the Dragon himself:-

In case anyone is on Twitter and would like to connect, Chiggs can be found lurking here- http://twitter.com/ChiggsHQ
