Harrogate Nursery Trade Fair will open to the public in 2016

Monday, November 23rd, 2015

Harrogate International Nursery Fair has been a trade-only show for over 45 years, and for the first time during the 2016 show it will combine the last day as both a trade and public open day.

This means companies making baby products who exhibit at the show can showcase their goods to shops and retailers on the first 2 days, then use the final day when public can attend to raise their profiles and market to their end consumers.

Show dates:
Sunday 20th March 2016 – Trade only
Monday 21st March 2016 – Trade only
Tuesday 22nd March 2016 – Trade and public open day

The announcement initially proved controversial, with exhibitors wondering how the new format will work as the final day will be a ‘no selling’ day, and will be to provide visitors with  information only.

Here at Chiggs we have exhibited our Baby Feed Wheels and Baby Medicine Wheels at this trade show twice in the past, although not for a few years now, and we are considering taking a stand at the 2016 show. So we have a few queries about how it will work!

Will non-trade visitors want to attend a baby show where they can’t buy anything? It’s on a Tuesday, so unless people are on maternity leave, will many be at work?  There will be demonstrations and seminars for mums and dads-to-be to encourage attendance… will this be enough of a draw?

Exhibitors will have to only display retail price on the Tuesday, as consumers won’t need to know wholesale prices. Any retailers visiting on the Tuesday will have to ask for the trade price “under the counter!”

Consumers visiting on the Tuesday who are interested in products will be directed towards local stockists…. in our case, if Chiggs exhibits that will be Little Star Company, a baby goods shop in Harrogate, or Magpie a greeting card shop also in Harrogate.

The show organisers have reported positive feedback from the majority of exhibitors…

Adrian Sneyd, show organiser, commented: “Initially there was a little confusion about how the trade and consumer day would be structured and there was concern that additional stock and payment facilities would be required. However, now that exhibitors understand that this is not the case, there will be no selling at the show; they are beginning to see the benefit of raising brand awareness to consumers.”

It’s a bold step from Harrogate Nursery Fair organisers, and has probably arisen because large companies are not paying to attend Harrogate trade show, they are doing their own individual company Show Cases instead. It’s very expensive to exhibit, and many smaller businesses like mine struggle to afford a stand. With fewer companies exhibiting at Harrogate, fewer independent shop owners are attending, and attendance figures are down; opening the show to the public may address this.

Small Business Saturday

Friday, December 5th, 2014

You may have heard that tomorrow is the second annual Small Business Saturday. “And what may that be, exactly?” I hear you ask. Well, taken from the website www.smallbusinesssaturdayuk.com :-

“Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-political, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities. The day itself takes place on the first shopping Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses.”

Baby Feed Wheels

The ‘non political’ aspect hasn’t prevented the politicians getting involved, as indeed they should for a campaign of this sort that will hopefully be beneficial to local economies. There is even a Christmas Market with little wooden huts and stalls manned by small businesses outside Downing Street in London!

In a statement, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said “Last year, Small Business Saturday generated around £468 million. Together, we can top that. There are special events taking place all over the country – backed by cross party support and organisations like the Federation of Small Businesses, Young Enterprise, The Prince’s Trust and others.

So, good luck to all of the UK businesses throwing open their doors on Small Business Saturday and every success for the future.

On Saturday 6 December when you are shopping for Christmas or something you need – choose small, choose local.”

Baby Medicine Wheel

As I have mentioned before, here at Chiggs we are passionate about supporting small businesses,  (well, we are a small business!) and shopping local. So, we urge you this Saturday to buy a Baby Feed Wheel, a Baby Medicine Wheel or a Get Well Wheel: if not directly from Chiggs, then from one of our wonderful, supportive stockists– we have small businesses all over the UK and online who sell Chiggs Wheels!

National Thinking of You Week

Thursday, September 18th, 2014

The GCA (Greeting Card Association) has launched a new special week to highlight the emotional power of sending and receiving greeting cards- and it’s happening soon!

National Thinking of You Week has the aim of spreading a little bit of love and happiness across the nation by getting everyone to send a card a day during the week of 22-28th of September 2014.

To get involved you just have to send seven cards during this week, and encourage friends, family and colleagues to do the same.

Cards don’t have to be posted! You can give them in person or pop one through a neighbours letter box. The GCA points out that it has been scientifically proven that receiving a handwritten card makes people feel much more special than getting a text or email.

So, if you know someone who has just found out they are expecting a baby (looking at you, Your Majesty!) send them a lemon Baby Feed Wheel from Chiggs.

Maybe a friend or relative has just had a baby? A blue or pink Baby Feed Wheel would be a lovely card to congratulate them with (or both if it’s twins!)

Or you may know someone who is a bit under the weather at the moment- maybe they have a cold coming on- give them a Get Well Wheel and you’re not only letting them know you are thinking of them, but they can even use the card to keep a track of their Beechams!

Pop into one of our stockists, buy a Chiggs Wheel, write a little message on the back and spread a little happiness next week! Look out for photos and events posted on Facebook and Twitter with hashtags #ThinkingOfYou, and #KeepBritainHappy

Busy, Busy!

Monday, August 18th, 2014

August has been very busy here at Chiggs- maybe all our stockists are getting their orders in to prepare for those September babies- (there is usually a baby boom 9 months after Christmas/New Year!).

We have sent more Chiggs Baby Wheels out to Angel Wholesale, the one stop shop for nappy cake, baby shower and baby basket supplies. If you head to section ‘nappy cakes’ and then ‘embellishments’ you can find each of the Baby Feed Wheels and the Baby Medicine Wheel. All Chiggs Baby Wheels are available in single quantities from Angel Wholesale, with savings to be made buying them in larger quantities.

Baby Feed Wheels have winged (wheeled?) their way to Maternal Instincts online maternity and breastfeeding boutique, Baby BoBo nappy cakes in Louth, Lincolnshire, and a variety of eBay shops, Mini AcornsClick and Buy gifts and Smartieprints.

It’s always a pleasure to visit one of our local stockists, Magpie Greetings here in Harrogate, and we dropped of a reorder of Baby Feed Wheels and Get Well Wheels this afternoon (and bought a lovely card while we were there- I never leave empty handed!)

Babies Babies baby shower specialists are another business who have restocked with Baby Feed Wheels this month. All our stockists sell Baby Feed Wheels, but not all sell the full range, so if there is a Chiggs Wheel you can’t find at your favourite independent retailer or online retailer, have a browse through the Chiggs shop

If you run a business and would also like to sell Chiggs Wheels, do have a look at our Trade and Wholesale page, and either fill in the trade enquiry form or send us an email for more information. We would be delighted to hear from you!

Greeting Chiggs stockists.

Thursday, March 6th, 2014

We have had a real variety of wholesale orders so far this year; re-orders from our regular retailers and we also have some brand new stockists of Chiggs Wheels.

The ‘Stockists’ page on the Chiggs website has been updated. This page  lists our retailers, ‘bricks and mortar’ shops county by county, and also has  ‘jump’ links to our international stockists, and to the online retailers who also sell Chiggs Wheels.  This is an incredibly diverse range of companies, including businesses offering baby gifts, greeting cards, children’s clothing, new baby hampers, nappy cakes and baby shower goodies. Phew!

New retailers to join the Chiggs family since our last stockist update in January include Smartieprints who specialise in personalised gifts, Lemon House Gifts, based in Preston, and Baby Cakes to Celebrate have added Baby Feed Wheels and Baby Medicine Wheels to their range.

A new shop recently opened up in Darlington, County Durham, Love Style Home, are selling Baby Feed Wheel ‘new baby’ congratulations cards and also the Get Well Wheel ‘get well soon’ cards.

We’ve also made deliveries to fellow Yorkshire businesses recently, Pots 2 Go ceramic cafe here in Harrogate (pictured above), Appleby Cards and Gifts in Otley, and Magpie Greetings (also in Harrogate, and incidentally our very first stockist way back in 2006!) have all reordered Chiggs Wheels for the delectation of their customers.

If you would like to sell Chiggs Wheels through your business, have a look at our Trade and Wholesale page, and either fill in the trade enquiry form or send us an email for more information. We’d love to hear from you!

New Year, new business?

Wednesday, January 29th, 2014

Here at Chiggs we’ve been around for a while now (some may say it shows!) and we find that the New Year leads to an increase in the number of enquiries we receive about our products.

Baby feeding product

The majority of our business is supplying our baby feeding products, medicine timers and greeting cards to a variety of retailers- we have some information about our trade and wholesale terms on the (you guessed it!) ‘Trade and Wholesale‘ page on the Chiggs website. All but the trade price is detailed there, and interested parties are invited to fill in the trade enquiry form to send us a message. We will, in turn, reply with not only the trade price, but a lovely email with pictures and everything.

Many people must make a  New Year Resolution to start their own business, or even just to find new products for a business they are already running, as we always see a spike in trade requests in January. And with this in mind, we are delighted to announce that we have a grand total of not one, not two, but three new stockists this month!

Medicine Timers

Medicine Timers

In the last few days we have sent out orders to Oh Nappy Days (what a great name!) who make some incredible crib and even motorcycle shaped nappy cakes;  Clickandbuygifts, a onestop online gift shop, and Little Tiddlywinks ltd whose fabulous tiered nappy cakes are works of art. We are delighted that these lovely businesses have chosen to add Chiggs Wheels to their product ranges!

Harrogate Christmas Market

Saturday, November 24th, 2012

This festive season our lovely town of Harrogate is holding it’s very first Christmas Market. We’ve been watching the preparations for a few days, as the marquees and stalls have been put up on a triangle of the Stray at the bottom of Montpelier Hill and Cold Bath Road. While fully intending to visit yesterday (Thursday) for the light switch on, Holly and I wimped out due to the monsoon-rain like conditions. However, this evening (Friday) has been a lovely clear and crisp winter night, so we had a walk down into town from Chiggs Headquarters, to enjoy the atmosphere and do a little Christmas shopping.

It was super! Holly was distracted by the stalls selling sweets, cupcakes and biscuits, while I’m a human magpie- love anything sparkly and shiny- and there were lots of different jewellery and gift stalls to keep me happy. We bought a few Christmas presents and chatted to some lovely stallholders about their businesses- one even said Holly should be running her own business as she did the hard sell (on me!) and I really will not be surprised if that prophesy comes true; my daughter is already showing a real entrepreneurial spirit even at the age of 9!

The Harrogate Christmas Market is well worth a visit, and is on for the next two days- Saturday the 23rd of November (10am-7pm) and Sunday 25th of November (10am-5pm). We hope it will become a regular feature of Christmas in Harrogate!

There are also a couple of events in Yorkshire that Chiggs stockists will be attending this weekend:

Little PJS will be at the Christmas Gift & Food Fair at Ripon Cathedral on Saturday the 24th of November (10:00 ’til 16:00) Entrance is £2.50, accompanied children are free. There will be over 70 stalls including gifts for all the family, food and wine tastings, home-made Christmas cakes, Santa’s Grotto, face-painting and children’s activities.

Baby Blessed will be taking their range of gifts and childrens products to the Christmas Fair at Shay Stadium, Halifax on Sunday the 25th November 2012

In addition, Twinkle Twinkle, a lovely baby and toddler shop in Sandbach, Cheshire who sell Chiggs Wheels have some late night openings for you to crack on with the Christmas shopping, on Friday 30th November they will be open until 8pm and every Thursday to Christmas will be open until 8pm too.

Baby Shower Parties- help is at hand!

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

If you fancy a Baby Shower but are unsure about the logistics of organising one, there are companies who are on hand to throw a baby shower party for you. Chiggs stockist Hugs and Stuff, based in West Yorkshire, will do as much or as little as you like- from invites, catering, decoration and games, through to even sending out personalised thank you letters!

If you are in East Yorkshire, Piglet’s Boutique will bring a selection of their new baby and new mummy gifts ( such as, of course, Baby Feed Wheels!) so that you and your friends can do a spot of baby shower shopping in a relaxed environment- ie sitting in  a comfy chair with a glass of juice or something stronger!

For pregnant ladies in the Wirral/Merseyside area Vikki, a Chiggs stockist very appropriately named The Baby Shower Lady has everything needed to help you throw a perfect party, be it a budget bash or lavish Beckhamesque occasion!

And finally, if you are more into a Do-It-Yourself baby shower, many Chiggs stockists including previously mentioned Hugs and Stuff, and also Baby Shower Host and Baby Shower Centre have some free printable downloads with party checklists, baby shower games and menu suggestions. Cheers!
