Harrogate Nursery Fair consumer day has been scrapped

Wednesday, January 20th, 2016

Harrogate International Nursery Fair announced in November that the final day of the trade fair, Tuesday the 22nd of March would be open to both trade and public visitors.

I wrote a post about this decision at the time, reporting that the idea of a mixed trade and consumer day had initially proved controversial, but that the show’s organisers had said that following the uncertainty about how such a day would work, exhibitors were backing the idea. Well, possibly not, as it has now been announced that the public day has been scrapped, and as with previous years the final day of the show will be trade only.

Harrogate International Nursery Fair is the UK’s only nursery trade show, and takes place in March at the International Conference Centre on Kings Road in the beautiful spa town of Harrogate… a town that Chiggs is lucky enough to call ‘home’!

Harrogate Nursery Fair 2015

Saturday, March 28th, 2015

Harrogate Nursery Fair starts tomorrow, and weather-wise it looks set to be a wild one! It will have been an interesting set-up day today in the gale force winds we have experienced.

Harrogate International Nursery Fair fills 6 halls of the Conference Centre, and this year will feature more than 180 exhibitors. Chiggs doesn’t have  an exhibition stand this year, but if you would like any trade information,  and a wholesale price for Chiggs Wheels, we have a trade enquiry form on the Chiggs website, or you can email us info@chiggs.co.uk and we will be delighted to send details of our patented new baby cards and medicine timers!

Always popular is the free drinks reception straight after the show on Monday! A good chance for a catch-up, chat and networking for both exhibitors and visitors, the After Show Drinks Reception (sponsored by Progressive Preschool magazine) will take place in the beautiful Royal Hall  from 6pm until 8pm. I know the free drinks will be the big draw, but it really will be worth attending to take in the splendour of the Royal Hall!

There is also a programme of seminars this year. Topics are:-

Are parents fitting child car seats correctly?

Will parents spend more in 2015?

Grandparents – are they your target customer?

Savvy social media & digital marketing for nursery stores

The online journey to becoming a Mum.

Latest requirements affecting the nursery industry.

Seminars are free to attend, and are in Hall H.

Harrogate International Nursery Fair runs from 29th to the 31st of March 2015 at Harrogate International Centre on King’s Road. Don’t forget, the clocks go forward one hour early on Sunday morning, so we lose an hour – don’t be late for the first day of the show!

From empty slots to pop-up shops

Friday, June 28th, 2013

No-one can miss the increasing number of empty, shuttered-up shops on our High Streets. Even here in Harrogate- a town previously renowned as being ‘recession proof’ we have the largest number of empty shops around town that I have seen since moving here 12 years ago, with both Independent and household name businesses closing.

Are people spending less on the High Street and more online?

Are business rents and rates too high for the smaller independent shops to afford?

Are parking costs putting people off, driving people to drive to out-of-town shopping malls where parking is free?

Here at Chiggs we practice what we preach, and really try to shop at our local independent retailers- buying meat from the butcher; fruit and veg from an excellent, knowledgeable greengrocers right in the centre of Harrogate; cards and presents from the gorgeous Magpie Greetings  (where Baby Feed Wheels and Get Well Wheels are also available!); and last December we held Holly’s birthday party at Pots 2 Go ceramic cafe in town (also a Chiggs stockist!)

Various initiatives have been started to try to help independent businesses. Mary Portas was appointed by the Government to lead a review into the future of Britain’s high streets (as mentioned previously on the Chiggs blog )- her recommendations generated many column inches in the newspapers- and the annual Independent Retailer Month will again be running throughout the month of July.

Pop-up shops have also started, well, popping up- taking over empty retail units on short term leases. While providing some rent for the landlord and filling an empty shop, albeit temporarily, pop up shops also give entrepreneurs an opportunity to try out their business model without  a huge outlay and tying themselves into the financial commitment of a long lease agreement.

Pop Up Britain (part of Start Up Britain) has recently opened a flagship pop-up shop on London’s famous King’s Road.  The outlet will offer short-term opportunities to start-ups and micro businesses from all over the country over a 12 month period. The fabulous news is that Chiggs stockist Hello Baby Gifts has been selected from over 800 applicants to have a shop, and will be taking their gorgeous baby gifts, hampers and nappy cakes (and of course Baby Feed Wheels!) to Kings’ Road in the first 2 weeks of August.
