A great Yorkshire brand with a great Yorkshire business at the Great Yorkshire Show!

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012

Here are some events coming up in July due to be attended by a variety of Chiggs stockists and their Chiggs Wheels!

Piglet’s Boutique will have a stall on Thursday the 5th of July at the Pocklington Ladies Night, to be held at Woldgate School from 7:30-9:00pm. There are lots of different stallholders, and even a licenced bar- sounds very civilised!

Bella ‘n’ Bob will have a stall displaying their toys, games and accessories for babies, (Chiggs Wheels included!) at the Gledhow Primary School Summer Fayre on Saturday the 7th of July (1.30 to 4pm)

Little Pjs are a Yorkshire based business specialising in baby and children’s clothes, nightwear, accessories and new baby gifts (including Chiggs Wheels), and will have a stand showcasing all their lovely goodies at the Yorkshire agricultural event of the year- the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate at the Yorkshire Showground, on the 10th, 11th and 12th of July. If  you are attending, look out for Ros in the  WiRE (Women in Rural Enterprize) tent.

It’s a busy month for Little Pj’s, as they will also be in the WiRE marquee at the Newport Show at Chetwynd Deer Park on Saturday the 14th of July.

Don’t forget, if you are a stockist getting out and about with your Chiggs Wheels, let me know the details of the events for future posts.

If you are a business owner looking to purchase a bulk order of Baby Feed Wheels, Baby Medicine Wheels and/or Get Well Wheels further information can be found on the Trade and Wholesale page on the Chiggs website, and  if you would like our trade price, minimum order quantity, postage costs or you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

And finally, tomorrow is the 4th of July, so once again it is ‘Independent’s Day’, an initiative to encourage consumers to support their local independent retailers by buying at least one item from an indie. We would like to encourage everyone to make that one item a Chiggs Wheel. 🙂

I’ve had a rash…

…of trade magazines delivered this week, covering all the industry sectors Chiggs Wheels overlap- nursery, greeting cards and gifts. Mary Portas’s review into the future of the UK High Street, commissioned by the Prime Minister last May,  has created a lot of interest and debate. Greetings Today Magazine discussed the report in it’s leader, while Nursery Industry Magazine carried an in-depth article setting out Mary’s 28 suggestions- ranging from a National Market Day to encourage potential shopkeepers, to free parking schemes to help bring customers back in to town centres. There are a lot of sensible, and what seem to be implementable (might have just made that word up…) ideas, and it will be interesting to see what the Government response is. It seems the wheels of Whitehall turn slowly, as the official response is sheduled for “spring”.

Given the press coverage Mary Portas’s recommendations received, and the interest in small businesses and the future of the UK High Street, it seems pertinent to mention an email I received this week giving advance notice of Independent Retailer Month 2012, which will be running throughout July this year.  This campaign aims to encourage people to ‘shop local’ by highlighting the important role that smaller, local, independent retailers play in the communities they serve and the local economy they contribute to.

And in Chiggs’s unofficial role of Independent Retailer Cheerleader (self-appointed) we’ll be running a new series of blog posts- “Stockist Spotlight”- to give an insight into the businesses we are fortunate to work with, and supply with Chiggs Wheels. We hope it will encourage our readers to visit, support and buy from local or online ‘Indies’, or even provide the inspiration for someone to start their own business!

Independents Day – Your high street needs you!

Monday, June 13th, 2011

We all know it’s tough out there in retail-land, and it seems that people are becoming worried about the plight of independent retailers on the UK High Street. Here in Harrogate we have recently lost another of the small, independent gift shops that makes this town different from the identikit-High-Streets with the closure of Lemontree. This is a particularly sad closure for Chiggs since the owners of Lemontree have been selling Chiggs Wheels for many years, and over that time they have also become friends.

On a happier note, I’ve recently come across a couple of initiatives aimed at helping Britains Independent retailers:-

Independents Day scheduled for the 4th of July (get it?!) is a national campaign to “support your local independent retailer” whereby “the public will be encouraged to buy at least one item from a local independent retailer and celebrate diversity on the high street.” Easy for Chiggs as we practice what we preach and always support our local shops, particularly our local stockists! They have a twitter account at www.twitter.com/Retail_IndieDay and a facebook page http://www.facebook.com/Independentsday if you would like to get involved.

A second initiative is Independent Retailer Month, July 2011 ( http://www.independentretailermonth.co.uk/ )which has 3 aims:-

to encourage consumers to celebrate their fave independent retailers,

to encourage independent retailers to create a ‘buzz’ in July, and

(this is the Chiggs bit!) encouraging suppliers and all those who service the independent retail sector to spread the word. (I think I can tick this one off with this blog post!)

There are still ongoing initiatives like the Theo Paphitis Small Business Sunday on Twitter #SBS where famous Dragon Theo chooses 6 small businesses to retweet to all his followers every Sunday. Chiggs was lucky enough to be retweeted last year (as gleefully blogged about here which was a wonderful boost to our business.

So, as the saying goes, if you want to save the High Street- vote with your feet! If you like to shop local, look no further than the lovely independent shops who sell Chiggs Wheels 🙂
