Family friendly treatments at Spruce Moose beauty salon, Harrogate

Tuesday, February 28th, 2017

Last year I was lucky enough to win an express manicure at Spruce Moose, here in Harrogate, in a competition on their Facebook page. As my nails are ridiculously short, (I don’t bite them, but they do break really easily) I treated my daughter (known here on the blog as Chiglet 🙂 ), and the lovely lady at Spruce Moose did a really terrific job.

I recently saw an update on the Spruce Moose Facebook page about ‘family friendly’ treatments, which will be offered on Mondays between 10am and 1pm. What a great idea! Any Mums and Dads looking for pampering ‘me time’ can take the children, too, as there will be a safe play area with clean, well looked after toys; extra treatment time; a private feeding area and plenty of wheel space for prams and push chairs.

Spruce Moose can be found at www.sprucemoose.com Unit 9, Westgate House, 5 Albert Street, Harrogate,

As you know, Chiggs Wheels are very proudly printed and hand finished in the UK, so to celebrate Buy British Day we will be offering a 10% discount on purchases made on the Chiggs online shop. There is, of course, a magic word… and the word is “Harrogate”. Just pop it in the ‘promotional code’ box at the checkout page, and 10% will magically disappear from the cost of your order 🙂

Harrogate Home and Gift (Buyers’ Festival) is open for business!

Sunday, July 17th, 2016

Today is the first day of the Harrogate Home and Gift trade fair, which runs until Wednesday the 20th of July.

The trade fair has been given a new name, and is now the Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival, possibly with a nod to the fun atmosphere Harrogate provides, which helps it stand out from other trade events and makes it so popular with both exhibitors and visitors!

Yes, there is plenty of Yorkshire Tea drunk, but the Pimms bar is also incredibly popular 🙂 . There are four product trails to follow around the trade fair, the Eco Trail, Best of British Trail, New Product Trail and Christmas Trail.

We’re not exhibiting at the Buyers’ festival, an exhibitors stand is a little out of our price range (as they say in Yorkshire “‘Ow Much?!”), and if you can’t make the trade fair either but would like to discover some fabulous British made greeting cards and gifts for yourself, have a look at the trade and wholesale page on the Chiggs website, and get in touch with us!

The Great Northern Retail Forum takes place over three days of the fair (Sunday to Tuesday) with a line-up of retail experts and speakers offering various talks in The Forum next to Hall D.

Cie Carabossa Fire Gardens

Friday, June 24th, 2016

Last night Chiglet and I went to a spectacular display in the Valley Gardens, in Harrogate. Part of the Harrogate International Festival (co-comissioned by the Yorkshire Festival) the Fire Garden was created by a French company Carabosse.

We were absolutely entranced! We got there at around 9pm and the fires were lit from around 9.15, and as dusk approached and the darkness encroached upon the remains of the daylight the fire installations seemed to brighten and intensify. (Yes, I know, rather arty-fart talk for Chiggs, but the whole magical experience affects you like that!)

Lighting the fires

I find fire rather mesmerising, and the mixture of large installations and many many small ones (like the flaming flowerpots lining the paths) was spectacular. The smell of incense combined with the scents of the Garden flowers, and with the heat of the flames and ethereal music it really did touch all the senses.

Cie Carabosse is also on this evening (Friday 24th of June) and tomorrow (25th of June) and I urge you to visit if you can. At £3 for adults and £1 for children our magical evening cost us a mere £4… as we say in Yorkshire, that, lad, is a reet bargain!

Wheel in the window

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2016

I was in my local town of Harrogate to do some shopping recently, and as usual my first stops were in some local Independent shops. We are lucky in Harrogate, in that we do still have a few non-chain retailers, although they are getting harder to find! A whole row of really lovely ‘indies’ closed down recently when a Jamie Oliver ‘Italian’ and a Nandos took over half a block in the centre of town.

One rather wonderful independent retailer we do still have, though, is Magpie on Beulah Street in the centre of town. Regular readers of this blog (Hi, Mum!) will recall that Magpie Greetings were my very very first stockist of Baby Feed Wheels, and have been re-ordering these ‘new baby’ cards (and now our Get Well Soon cards, too) for the last 10-odd years!

You can imagine my delight, then, to see that Magpie have put a pink Baby Feed Wheel in their window display! I still get excited when I see Chiggs Wheels actually for sale in real live shops, so I was skipping down Beulah Street to be part of a window display! Thank you Magpie!

#shopsbs is launched, and Chiggs’s cards will float your boat.

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016

It was a few years ago now, but some of you may remember when Chiggs was retweeted on twitter by Theo Paphitis (of Dragon’s Den fame) when he chose us as a winner of his Small Business Sunday (‪#‎SBS‬) initiative.

#SBS

#SBS

It was a huge honour, and last year I attended one of the yearly SBS events with some other Harrogate based business owners. The exciting announcement at this year’s event was the development of an SBS shop, and now it has been launched! It is to showcase the products of the businesses who have won #SBS and Chiggs is delighted to be included.

If you are looking for a ‘New Baby’ card that the new parents will be delighted to receive, or for a Get Well Soon card with a useful twist, Chiggs Baby Feed Wheels and Get Well Wheels are here on the SBS shop.

Have a look around, there are some lovely items!

Harrogate Nursery Fair consumer day has been scrapped

Wednesday, January 20th, 2016

Harrogate International Nursery Fair announced in November that the final day of the trade fair, Tuesday the 22nd of March would be open to both trade and public visitors.

I wrote a post about this decision at the time, reporting that the idea of a mixed trade and consumer day had initially proved controversial, but that the show’s organisers had said that following the uncertainty about how such a day would work, exhibitors were backing the idea. Well, possibly not, as it has now been announced that the public day has been scrapped, and as with previous years the final day of the show will be trade only.

Harrogate International Nursery Fair is the UK’s only nursery trade show, and takes place in March at the International Conference Centre on Kings Road in the beautiful spa town of Harrogate… a town that Chiggs is lucky enough to call ‘home’!

Happy New Year… here’s to a joyful 2016!

Thursday, January 14th, 2016

Happy New Year to you all!

There was a celebration in December as the 15th was the 10th Birthday for Chiggs, marking the day 10 years ago that I took delivery of the very first print run of Baby Feed Wheels. I can scarcely believe I have been running my business for 10 years, and I’m very much looking forward to the next 10!

Rewind to 10 years ago this January, and I was approaching local shops to see if they wanted to sell the Baby Feed Wheels. I had a great reaction to the cards, and was also offered some very useful advice… of course, I was completely new to business, so any help was very very welcome! On the advice of a local card shop I put the cards in cellophane wrappers… I’d been so involved with the design of the Wheels, it was something I hadn’t thought of!

The very first shop I approached was Magpie Greetings, which at the time was based in the Westminster Arcade in Harrogate. They bought a stock of Baby Feed Wheels to sell in their shop, and I’m delighted to say that 10 years down the line, many re-orders (and a premises move to Beulah Street) Magpie are still selling Chiggs Wheels! They now also sell the Get Well Wheels in their ‘get well soon’ card section.

Here is a #ThrowbackThursday photo of me and Chiglet at our exhibition stand at the Harrogate Card and Wrap Trade Fair, taken in January 2009. I must point out that my little helper is now 13 and as tall as me!

Harrogate Nursery Trade Fair will open to the public in 2016

Monday, November 23rd, 2015

Harrogate International Nursery Fair has been a trade-only show for over 45 years, and for the first time during the 2016 show it will combine the last day as both a trade and public open day.

This means companies making baby products who exhibit at the show can showcase their goods to shops and retailers on the first 2 days, then use the final day when public can attend to raise their profiles and market to their end consumers.

Show dates:
Sunday 20th March 2016 – Trade only
Monday 21st March 2016 – Trade only
Tuesday 22nd March 2016 – Trade and public open day

The announcement initially proved controversial, with exhibitors wondering how the new format will work as the final day will be a ‘no selling’ day, and will be to provide visitors with  information only.

Here at Chiggs we have exhibited our Baby Feed Wheels and Baby Medicine Wheels at this trade show twice in the past, although not for a few years now, and we are considering taking a stand at the 2016 show. So we have a few queries about how it will work!

Will non-trade visitors want to attend a baby show where they can’t buy anything? It’s on a Tuesday, so unless people are on maternity leave, will many be at work?  There will be demonstrations and seminars for mums and dads-to-be to encourage attendance… will this be enough of a draw?

Exhibitors will have to only display retail price on the Tuesday, as consumers won’t need to know wholesale prices. Any retailers visiting on the Tuesday will have to ask for the trade price “under the counter!”

Consumers visiting on the Tuesday who are interested in products will be directed towards local stockists…. in our case, if Chiggs exhibits that will be Little Star Company, a baby goods shop in Harrogate, or Magpie a greeting card shop also in Harrogate.

The show organisers have reported positive feedback from the majority of exhibitors…

Adrian Sneyd, show organiser, commented: “Initially there was a little confusion about how the trade and consumer day would be structured and there was concern that additional stock and payment facilities would be required. However, now that exhibitors understand that this is not the case, there will be no selling at the show; they are beginning to see the benefit of raising brand awareness to consumers.”

It’s a bold step from Harrogate Nursery Fair organisers, and has probably arisen because large companies are not paying to attend Harrogate trade show, they are doing their own individual company Show Cases instead. It’s very expensive to exhibit, and many smaller businesses like mine struggle to afford a stand. With fewer companies exhibiting at Harrogate, fewer independent shop owners are attending, and attendance figures are down; opening the show to the public may address this.

Harrogate’s Little Star

Friday, April 17th, 2015

Last week I delivered a re-order of Baby Feed Wheels to one of our local stockists, Little Star Co, a beautiful baby shop on Westmoreland Street here in Harrogate.

If you’re in this area of North Yorkshire and looking for travel systems, accessories, clothing, gifts or feeding essentials I can thoroughly recommend a visit!

The shop is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am til 5pm, and by appointment on Sundays and Mondays. A member of the team is available to  fully demonstrate and explain the features of the prams on offer, and the aim of Little Star Co is to create a relaxing shopping experience, which I’m sure new parents-to-be will appreciate!

Little Star Co is also an award winner as Anna, the owner, picked up the gong for ‘Best New Retailer’ at the esteemed Nursery Industry Awards in October 2014. We are very lucky to have such a lovely, Independent shop in our town!
