Harrogate Nursery Fair weather update

Saturday, March 23rd, 2013

Tomorrow is the opening day of the biggest trade fair in the Nursery Industry’s calendar, The Harrogate Nursery Fair at the International Conference Centre, Harrogate. Chiggs is fortunate to be based in the beautiful spa town of Harrogate, with Chiggs HQ being a mere mile up the road from the conference Centre- how convenient!

Harrogate Nursery Fair weather reportAlthough spring has officially sprung, someone forgot to tell Mother Nature, and we seem to be in the grip of a new ice age in North Yorkshire at the moment! It snowed pretty much all day yesterday, and as I type this on Saturday morning the snow is still coming down accompanied by strong gusts of wind…brrrr!

The picture here is of our road- so you can see the volume of snow that has fallen on Harrogate in the last few hours!  The local roads in the area are very difficult, but the main roads in town are mostly clear. Here is a link to our local radio station, Stray Fm’s traffic and travel updates http://www.strayfm.com/trafficandtravel.php

For those visitors flying in to the trade fair via Leeds Bradford Airport, however, the airport has been snow closed for periods over the last 36 hours with some delays, and it’s recommended that you check with your airline to get the latest updates- here is a link to the arrivals and departures updates on the Leeds Bradford Airport website.  http://www.leedsbradfordairport.co.uk/arrivals-and-departures

If you are visiting or exhibiting, I hope you have a very successful show- Chiggs doesn’t have  an exhibition stand this year, but if you would like any trade information and a wholesale price for Chiggs Wheels, we have a trade enquiry form on the Chiggs website, or you can email us info@chiggs.co.uk and we will be delighted to send details of our unique, patented new baby gifts and greeting cards!

Nursery Industry Trade Magazine

I’m very excited to have become a published author (ooh, maybe something else I could put on my business card?!) with an article in the ‘Viewpoint’ section of Nursery Industry magazine, a monthly trade mag for the baby and nursery industry.

The article ‘Can the Union Jack boost the flagging economy’ (geddit?) expresses the hope that the patriotism and pride in Britain that we are seeing so much more of this year, will lead to a change in consumer buying- with customers actively looking to buy goods that are Made in the UK.

I was driving my daughter to her cricket match a couple of days ago, in a gorgeous little North Yorkshire village that was festooned in red white and blue bunting- it all looked wonderful! As the UK hangs out the bunting to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympic games, I hope that the happy patriotism helps people realise that if they buy UK made products, they can help boost the British economy.

I’m very proud that Chiggs Wheels are all printed in the UK. The envelope each is supplied with, and cellophane the Wheels are lovingly enclosed in are made very local to us, in Bradford. Even the little stickers used in the ‘handmade’ process to attach the embellishments are from a business in Shipley, West Yorkshire, just round the corner from where my husband was born. We do like to keep things local!

Just like throwing a pebble in a pond, as I sell my Wheels to the lovely independent businesses who sell baby goods and greeting cards to the public, so I place orders with my UK suppliers, and the economic benefits spead outwards. If the buying public and retailers make an effort to buy British, maybe the legacy of the summer of 2012 could be a boost for british business?

It’s hip to be square

The Harrogate Home and Gift trade Show is over for another year. It ran from the 17th to the 20th of July, filling the whole of the International Conference Centre (and much more besides!). I’ve been attending as a visitor for the last 5 years, since I started with Chiggs, and this year seemed to be the biggest ever- they keep finding subterranean halls to open and fill with exhibitors, and I think now the whole of the underground car park has been turned into exhibitor space. I’m sure that the vast majority of residents of Harrogate have no idea about the acres of space, bustling with people, under Kings Road!

Many local hotels are also used for the Home and Gift Show, with The Cairn hosting Gitware exhibitors, and The Majestic having ‘gifts for Men’ in the hotel, a rather wonderful jazz band playing on the terrace, and its grounds filled with semi-permanent ‘marquees’ (that word doesn’t do them justice, they are better built than my first house was!)

I went to meet some Twitter friends who run businesses exhibiting there, to browse businesses supplying products Chiggs need to purchase to make our business run smoothly (display units, stationery, packaging, embellishments etc ) and to check out the trends in the greeting card and gift market (if  ‘bunting’ is the new ‘cupcakes’ I wonder what the new ‘bunting’ will be?!)

Another trend that struck me is ‘square’ greeting cards. Now, I didn’t set out to design only square cards, the dial that makes the cards so useful and unique, in many ways, dictated the size and shape of Chiggs Wheels.  While some greeting card publishers have a variety of shapes and sizes in their ranges (including a few square cards), I noticed a few companies exhibiting at this year’s trade show whose entire range was square. It’s hip to be square!

More info:-Chiggs Wheels are approx 13cm x 13cm square, supplied with a white envelope and sealed in a cellophane wrapper with a printed insert. They are available to buy from the Chiggs online shop, from a variety of independent retailers, and at trade and wholesale rates exclusively from Chiggs.

Get Well Soon, flower

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

We are delighted to introduce our new style Get Well Wheel,  developed in response to stockists getting in touch and asking for a funky addition to the range, for children or teenagers (ie those who are between the teddy bear on the Baby Medicine Wheel and the hot water bottle of the original Get Well Wheel!)

Get well soon flower embellishment

Get well soon card with flower embellishment

Supplied with it’s own envelope, and sealed in a cellophane wrapper this is a beautiful ‘get well soon’ card, and with it’s numbered dial to keep note of medicine times, it’s also truly useful!

The green and orange layered flower and leaf embellishment complements the cream coloured card, and as with all Chiggs Wheels, the new ‘flower’ Get Well Wheel is printed and handfinished in the UK.

So, if you’re looking for an innovative Get Well Soon greeting card, The flower Get Well Wheel is available from the online shop on the Chiggs website for just £3.99 (with free postage and packing)  and of course is available at wholesale for stockists old and new.

We’ll be adding to the range of embellishments in the Get Well Wheel range, so let us know what you’d like to see!

set the numbered dial to record the time you take medicine, and you'll know when the next dose of tablets are due!

Fair’s Fair.

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

It’s a shame the Harrogate Nursery Fair that was scheduled for the 19th and 20th of October ’10 has been cancelled. The Baby Show for Trade due to be held at London’s Olympia earlier in the month is a little far for us- mind you, with the Harrogate International Conference Centre just one mile away from Chiggs Towers, we are rather spoilt to have access to trade shows right on our doorstep!

Chiggs has visited a fair few trade shows over the years, and we’ve enjoyed exhibiting at some of them, too.  We exhibited at the  Harrogate Nursery Fair just after starting up in March 2006, where the Baby Feed Wheel (at the time our only product!) received an excellent response. We were thrilled to be chosen by trade mag Childrenswear Buyer Magazine as one of their ‘picks of the show’.

Display of Chiggs Wheels at trade fair

Having only just started Chiggs, we were very new to the baby goods business way back then, but we met some lovely people, and found the nursery industry to be very friendly-  fellow exhibitors offered helpful advice, and we received wholesale orders from many new retail outlets who are still ordering  Chiggs Wheels from us nearly 5 years later.

More recently, last year we exhibited Chiggs Wheels at two rather different trade fairs, the first being Card and Wrap (which was part of the Christmas and Gift fair) held in Harrogate in January. We had a stand in the lovely conservatory room in the famous Harrogate hotel The Old Swan. It really was a super place to spend 3 days (not least because our stand was next to the complementary tea, coffee and biscuits- result!)

This trade fair was aimed at greeting card and gift retailers, and we had brilliant feedback about the Baby Feed Wheel as an original, out-of-the-ordinary ‘new baby’ congratulations card, and the Get Well Wheel was very popular as a get well soon card that was not only very different from the usual, but useful, too. Because all Chiggs Wheels are supplied with an envelope and sealed in a cellophane wrapper, they are perfect products for greeting card retailers, and we gained many new stockists from all over the UK at that show.

A couple of months later, in March ’09 it was ‘back to babies’, and we exhibited again at the Harrogate Nursery Fair. Our daughter, Holly, was involved as always, coming down after school to help give out leaflets- a job she absolutely loves, so much so that she’s constantly asking when our next trade exhibition will be! I’m assuming this is because she loves helping with her Mummy’s business, and not because she knows that lots of stands hand out sweets, mints and other goodies!

Where we are now

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

The Chiggs Wheels range was completed (for now- watch this space, as I’m always working on new ideas!) with the Get Well Wheel. My husband Andrew’s Gran asked to have a Baby Medicine Wheel so she could use it to keep track of the cholesterol tablets she takes on a daily basis. Even during the design process for the Baby Medicine Wheel I realised that the concept would be useful for everyone, and Grandma Winnie’s request spurred me on!

The design of the Get Well Wheel actually took longer than the other Wheels, mainly because I got fixated with a

Sorry you’re ill

Time of Last Pill

rhyming couplet which, frankly, was never going to fit on the front of the card, and also because for a while I couldn’t find an embellishment I was happy with.

Eventually it all clicked into place, with the Get Well Wheel designed as a neutral cream card with a red hot water bottle embellishment, and ‘Time of Last medicine’ printed on the front. To appeal to our greeting card shop stockists who sell the Baby Feed Wheel as a (useful!) new baby congratulations card, the Get Well Wheel is supplied with an envelope so that it’s a (useful!) get well soon card- far more practical than a bunch of grapes!

While designing and developing these new products to increase the Chiggs range, we have continued to focus on the wholesale and trade side of the business. Features in trade magazines such as Gift Focus Magazine (pictured below)  launching the Get Well Wheel have helped us build up the number of greeting card shops selling Chiggs Wheels, adding to the nursery/baby shops and online retailers already selling our products.
