Harrogate Home and Gift (Buyers’ Festival) is open for business!

Sunday, July 17th, 2016

Today is the first day of the Harrogate Home and Gift trade fair, which runs until Wednesday the 20th of July.

The trade fair has been given a new name, and is now the Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival, possibly with a nod to the fun atmosphere Harrogate provides, which helps it stand out from other trade events and makes it so popular with both exhibitors and visitors!

Yes, there is plenty of Yorkshire Tea drunk, but the Pimms bar is also incredibly popular ūüôā . There are four product trails to follow around the trade fair, the Eco Trail, Best of British Trail, New Product Trail and Christmas Trail.

We’re not exhibiting at the Buyers’ festival, an exhibitors stand is a little out of our price range (as they say in Yorkshire “‘Ow Much?!”), and if you can’t make the trade fair either but would like to discover some fabulous British made greeting cards and gifts for yourself, have a look at the trade and wholesale page on the Chiggs website, and get in touch with us!

The Great Northern Retail Forum takes place over three days of the fair (Sunday to Tuesday) with a line-up of retail experts and speakers offering various talks in The Forum next to Hall D.

Harrogate’s Little Star

Friday, April 17th, 2015

Last week I delivered a re-order of Baby Feed Wheels to one of our local stockists, Little Star Co, a beautiful baby shop on Westmoreland Street here in Harrogate.

If you’re in this area of North Yorkshire and looking for travel systems, accessories, clothing, gifts or feeding essentials I can thoroughly recommend a visit!

The shop is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am til 5pm, and by appointment on Sundays and Mondays. A member of the team is available to¬† fully demonstrate and explain the features of the prams on offer, and the aim of Little Star Co is to create a relaxing shopping experience, which I’m sure new parents-to-be will appreciate!

Little Star Co is also an award winner as Anna, the owner, picked up the gong for ‚ÄėBest New Retailer‚Äô at the esteemed Nursery Industry Awards in October 2014. We are very lucky to have such a lovely, Independent shop in our town!

Home & Gift Harrogate

Thursday, June 19th, 2014

July is on it’s way, and that means the Home and Gift 2014 trade show will be hitting Chiggs’s home town of Harrogate.

Home & Gift is a huge event, it takes up all the Halls in the Harrogate International Conference Centre, the Cairn Hotel (with marquees in the grounds) and the Majestic hotel with a number of enormous marquees covering their gardens, too. It covers so much of the town centre, that there is a free shuttle bus running around all the venues.

Organised by Clarion Events, Home & Gift Harrogate features hundreds of exhibitors (over 1,000!) who produce, wholesale or import a variety of products:- design-led and everyday gifts, homewares, jewellery & fashion accessories and greetings & stationery.

Retailers (both with bricks and mortar shops, and those who operate on line web based stores) attend the show looking to buy new lines for their shops, or visit current suppliers to renew old acquaintances and see if there are new products on offer.

Chiggs is not exhibiting at the event, although we are very happy to meet any retailers attending the show to demonstrate our new baby cards, parenting products and Get Well Soon cards over a coffee (or even a Pimms in  the Pimms tent!). Wholesale and trade information is available on the Chiggs website, and there is a trade enquiry form to request the trade price, or any other information.

Although Home & Gift is a serious buying event in any retailer’s calendar, there are various social events during the show, too- there is no escaping from football, as the World Cup Final will be shown on Sunday the 13th of July, after the very civilised sounding ‘Sunday Sun-downer’ ¬†event at 6pm the same evening.

Monday the 14th of July sees a pub quiz held at the Cairn Hotel, and the last evening during the show is marked with a  party night at the Revolution Bar.

The show preview popped through the Chiggs postbox a few days ago, and we were delighted to see that local Chiggs stockist Pots 2 Go get a mention in the Harrogate feature- ‘Shopping in the Montpellier Quarter’

Baby showers (and plastic babies).

Monday, April 30th, 2012

Baby showers seem to be regarded as an American import but I think maybe it’s just the name rather than the concept that’s new- the idea of ladies getting together before an imminent arrival has been around for years.

When I was pregnant nearly a decade ago now (eep!) a friend organised a baby shower for me- it was just a get-together with a group of friends for a glass of wine (orange juice for me!) to have a bit of a chat, time to contemplate the changes that lay ahead, and I was lucky enough to receive some presents- posh toiletries for my hospital bag, and a lovely snuggly snow suit (December baby!) are a couple I remember.

When my friend herself was expecting a few years later, we had upped our game, and I pointed the organiser in the direction of Chiggs stockist Shower my Baby;¬†so we had themed¬†games, snacks, balloons, napkins and even little advice cards to fill in, passing on our ‘pearls of wisdom’ to the mum-to-be. For my part, the day before the ‘do’ ¬†I’d read about a game where little plastic baby-shaped favours are frozen in ice cubes, placed in everyone’s drinks, and the first person whose baby floats free shouts ‘my waters have broken’.

¬†‘Fun fun fun’ I thought, but as I’d left it too late to buy the plastic babies,¬†and with¬†necessity being the mother of invention, I nabbed some of my daughter’s jelly babies to use. Reader, it was not a good idea. The sugar on the jelly babies turned our Chardonnay into a dessert wine, and the babies themselves formed a mussy sludge at the bottom of our glasses. We still drank the wine though. But learn from my error, and buy plastic babies!

As most people need little enough excuse for a party, unsuprisingly the baby shower industry continues to grow. The Baby Feed Wheel is a perfect pressie to give to an expectant Mum at her baby shower, and we have baby shower stockists selling Chiggs Wheels, with others adding Baby Feed Wheels to nappy cakes and baby hampers;- brilliant baby shower gifts.

I’ve had a rash…

Friday, January 27th, 2012

…of trade magazines delivered this week, covering all the industry sectors Chiggs Wheels¬†overlap- nursery, greeting cards and gifts. Mary Portas’s¬†review into the future of the UK High Street, commissioned by the Prime Minister last May,¬† has created a lot of interest and debate. Greetings Today Magazine discussed the report in it’s leader, while¬†Nursery Industry Magazine carried an in-depth article setting out Mary’s 28 suggestions- ranging from a National Market Day to encourage potential shopkeepers, to free parking schemes to help bring customers back in to town centres. There are a lot of sensible, and what seem to be implementable (might have just made that word up…) ideas, and it will be interesting to see what the Government response is. It seems the wheels of Whitehall turn slowly, as the official response is sheduled for “spring”.

Given the press coverage Mary Portas’s recommendations received, and the interest in small businesses and the future of the UK High Street, it seems pertinent to mention an email I received this week giving advance notice of Independent Retailer Month 2012, which will be running throughout July this year.¬†¬†This campaign aims to encourage people to ‘shop local’ by highlighting the important role that smaller, local, independent retailers play in the communities they serve and¬†the local economy they contribute to.

And in Chiggs’s unofficial role of Independent Retailer Cheerleader (self-appointed) we’ll be running a new¬†series of blog posts- “Stockist Spotlight”- to give an insight into the businesses we are fortunate to work with, and¬†supply with¬†Chiggs Wheels. We hope it will encourage our readers to visit, support and buy from local or online ‘Indies’, or even provide the inspiration for someone to start their own business!
