This is the first of a (probably somewhat infrequent) series;- “Chiggs Makes!”

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m very proud of my card ‘makes’ , but after 10 years it’s safe to say I’ve got them down pat. This is something a bit different to the usual Baby Feed Wheels, Baby Medicine Wheels and Get Well Wheels!

My husband is a big tea drinker (i.e. he drinks a lot of tea, not that he’s big… he’s around 5 ft 10 allowing for shrinkage).  He’s also very fussy about his tea, which is why I refuse to make it for him… many years ago when we first met he made the mistake of saying I made the worst cup of tea he had ever tasted. Big mistake. Huge! He’s had to make is own for the last 19 years.

Each cup of tea has to be made in his little tea pot and left to brew. I have noticed recently that he’s been using a tea towel to put on the tea pot to keep it warm while it mashes, so as the loving wife that I am I have been looking around for a little tea cosy to fit over his little tea-pot-for-one. Not easy to find! In fact, I found it impossible, so I decided to have a crack at making one myself, and I was very pleased with how it turned out. Which is why I’m boasting blogging about it here.

Choice of fabric was easy: it had to be tiger print. I like to buy (or make) tiger things for my husband, because my favourite football team are nicknamed The Tigers. He doesn’t support this football team, he supports a completely different and far inferior football team, but I don’t let this stop me in my quest to tigerify his little life.

I was without a pattern, and quite honestly winging it, so cut 2 pieces in an elongated oval shape, and sandwiched a semi circular piece of wadding in between each pair. The fold then became the bottom of each semi circular half, I pinned together both pieces and sewed the whole lot, i.e. both ‘wadding sandwiches’ (not actually a technical sewing term!) around the curved edge.

Sewn around the wadding sandwich

Turned right side out so the stitching was on the inside, and voila! A Tiger Tea Cosy.

Happy New Year… here’s to a joyful 2016!

Happy New Year to you all!

There was a celebration in December as the 15th was the 10th Birthday for Chiggs, marking the day 10 years ago that I took delivery of the very first print run of Baby Feed Wheels. I can scarcely believe I have been running my business for 10 years, and I’m very much looking forward to the next 10!

Rewind to 10 years ago this January, and I was approaching local shops to see if they wanted to sell the Baby Feed Wheels. I had a great reaction to the cards, and was also offered some very useful advice… of course, I was completely new to business, so any help was very very welcome! On the advice of a local card shop I put the cards in cellophane wrappers… I’d been so involved with the design of the Wheels, it was something I hadn’t thought of!

The very first shop I approached was Magpie Greetings, which at the time was based in the Westminster Arcade in Harrogate. They bought a stock of Baby Feed Wheels to sell in their shop, and I’m delighted to say that 10 years down the line, many re-orders (and a premises move to Beulah Street) Magpie are still selling Chiggs Wheels! They now also sell the Get Well Wheels in their ‘get well soon’ card section.

Here is a #ThrowbackThursday photo of me and Chiglet at our exhibition stand at the Harrogate Card and Wrap Trade Fair, taken in January 2009. I must point out that my little helper is now 13 and as tall as me!

So ‘Buy British’ today! The full range of Chiggs Wheels- Baby Feed Wheels, Baby Medicine Wheel and Get Well Wheels- are available from the shop on the Chiggs website, and our cards can also be bought from our stockists -have a browse on the stockist page to find a Wheel near you!
