Buy British Day – Discount on www.chiggs.co.uk to celebrate!

Saturday, October 1st, 2016

Saturday, the 1st of October 2016, has been designated as ‘Buy British Day’.
The hashtag #BuyBritishDay will be used to promote products Made in the UK, and lots of British-made brands will be supporting the occasion and offering special discounts.

New baby congratulations cards

As you know, Chiggs Wheels are very proudly printed and hand finished in the UK, so to celebrate Buy British Day we will be offering a 10% discount on purchases made on the Chiggs online shop. There is, of course, a magic word… and the word is “Harrogate”. Just pop it in the ‘promotional code’ box at the checkout page, and 10% will magically disappear from the cost of your order 🙂

‘High Street July’ encouraging people to shop local, shop Independent

Thursday, July 7th, 2016

As you know, here at Chiggs we are passionate about championing local independent businesses, as they are the lovely people who sell Chiggs Wheels and keep my little business going!

Also waving the ‘buy local, buy Indie’ flag is the national website Free Postcode Lottery. They have unveiled a campaign called High Street July to encourage people to shop from their local independent retailers, to help prevent “Our local businesses [being]  pushed out by big supermarket chains and our high streets blighted by betting shops”!

If you are a member of Free Postcode lottery (and as the name suggests, it’s free to join!)  you need to  take a photo/scan of your receipt and email it to receipts@freepostcodelottery.com and they will add 5% of your spend to your Bonus.

I’ve been signed up to the Free Postcode Lottery website for a while now, and check the draw daily. I’ve not had any luck yet, but by checking everyday I have built up a little bonus pot, which will be added to my winnings should I strike lucky!

If you’d like to have a look at the lottery page to find out how it all works, (and it is legit… the prize money is generated by the advertising revenue from the site, and Martin Lewis at money saving expert has recommended the lottery… that’s how I found out about it and registered my postcode!) follow my link:- Free Postcode Lottery

#shopsbs is launched, and Chiggs’s cards will float your boat.

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016

It was a few years ago now, but some of you may remember when Chiggs was retweeted on twitter by Theo Paphitis (of Dragon’s Den fame) when he chose us as a winner of his Small Business Sunday (‪#‎SBS‬) initiative.

#SBS

#SBS

It was a huge honour, and last year I attended one of the yearly SBS events with some other Harrogate based business owners. The exciting announcement at this year’s event was the development of an SBS shop, and now it has been launched! It is to showcase the products of the businesses who have won #SBS and Chiggs is delighted to be included.

If you are looking for a ‘New Baby’ card that the new parents will be delighted to receive, or for a Get Well Soon card with a useful twist, Chiggs Baby Feed Wheels and Get Well Wheels are here on the SBS shop.

Have a look around, there are some lovely items!

Harrogate Nursery Fair consumer day has been scrapped

Wednesday, January 20th, 2016

Harrogate International Nursery Fair announced in November that the final day of the trade fair, Tuesday the 22nd of March would be open to both trade and public visitors.

I wrote a post about this decision at the time, reporting that the idea of a mixed trade and consumer day had initially proved controversial, but that the show’s organisers had said that following the uncertainty about how such a day would work, exhibitors were backing the idea. Well, possibly not, as it has now been announced that the public day has been scrapped, and as with previous years the final day of the show will be trade only.

Harrogate International Nursery Fair is the UK’s only nursery trade show, and takes place in March at the International Conference Centre on Kings Road in the beautiful spa town of Harrogate… a town that Chiggs is lucky enough to call ‘home’!

Happy New Year… here’s to a joyful 2016!

Thursday, January 14th, 2016

Happy New Year to you all!

There was a celebration in December as the 15th was the 10th Birthday for Chiggs, marking the day 10 years ago that I took delivery of the very first print run of Baby Feed Wheels. I can scarcely believe I have been running my business for 10 years, and I’m very much looking forward to the next 10!

Rewind to 10 years ago this January, and I was approaching local shops to see if they wanted to sell the Baby Feed Wheels. I had a great reaction to the cards, and was also offered some very useful advice… of course, I was completely new to business, so any help was very very welcome! On the advice of a local card shop I put the cards in cellophane wrappers… I’d been so involved with the design of the Wheels, it was something I hadn’t thought of!

The very first shop I approached was Magpie Greetings, which at the time was based in the Westminster Arcade in Harrogate. They bought a stock of Baby Feed Wheels to sell in their shop, and I’m delighted to say that 10 years down the line, many re-orders (and a premises move to Beulah Street) Magpie are still selling Chiggs Wheels! They now also sell the Get Well Wheels in their ‘get well soon’ card section.

Here is a #ThrowbackThursday photo of me and Chiglet at our exhibition stand at the Harrogate Card and Wrap Trade Fair, taken in January 2009. I must point out that my little helper is now 13 and as tall as me!

National Cat Day (well, why not?!)

Thursday, October 29th, 2015

Today is National Cat Day! (Really, who comes up with these?!)

Anyway, to celebrate, here are a couple of pictures of Daisy the Chiggs Cat. She is a lovely 4 year old cat who we adopted from the local RSCPCA cat shelter, where she had been taken with her 3 kittens, around this time last year.

In this picture she is ‘helping’ me stocktake in the office (by settling in the furthest point of the cupboard!)

And here is Daisy lying on my lap last night practicing her ‘gangnam style’!

Today, Saturday the 3rd of October is ‘Buy British Day’. The campaign started last year with the very first ‘Buy British Day’, and as last year you can follow the #buybritishday hashtag on social media to find out more about the campaign.

buy british day 2015

I’ve said it (many times!) before, and I’m sure I’ll be saying it again 🙂 Chiggs is very proud that Chiggs Wheels are all printed and handfinished in the UK. Our printers are a fabulous Lancashire based family business, and our envelopes, cello bags and even the sticky pads we use to hand-embellish our cards with are all made in Yorkshire.

So ‘Buy British’ today! The full range of Chiggs Wheels- Baby Feed Wheels, Baby Medicine Wheel and Get Well Wheels- are available from the shop on the Chiggs website, and our cards can also be bought from our stockists -have a browse on the stockist page to find a Wheel near you!

If you’re a retailer who would like to join the British revolution, Chiggs Wheels are all available to trade at wholesale prices, and we will be very happy to send you our trade price, terms and information by email if you fill in the trade enquiry form.

All the right words, just not necessarily in the right order!

Ah, the perils of Google translate!

I have alerts set up with Google to let me know when terms such as ‘Baby Feed Wheel’, ‘Baby Medicine Wheel’ ‘Get Well Wheel’ ‘Chiggs’ etc etc are mentioned on the web, and I had a corker pop into my inbox recently. Looking into it, this is from a website that has been set up (by a non-English speaker!) to use a lot of keywords and get people to visit the site and click on adverts. Not a problem, there are a lot of them about, but it looks like this one has lobbed our description of the Baby Feed Wheel into a translation tool, with a rather interesting result…

What’s a Youngster Feed Wheel?
The Baby Feed Wheel is a really useful nursery merchandise for model spanking new mom and father that helps them keep monitor of baby’s boy’s feeding events – merely flip the numbered dial to doc the time when baby has his or her milk feed. Whether or not or not by way of the sleep interrupted night time time time, or the sleep deprived daytime when there are so many totally different points to think about, the Youngster Feed Wheel provides a clear reminder of the time of your Youngster’s Boy’s remaining feed.

Harrogate Nursery Fair 2015

Saturday, March 28th, 2015

Harrogate Nursery Fair starts tomorrow, and weather-wise it looks set to be a wild one! It will have been an interesting set-up day today in the gale force winds we have experienced.

Harrogate International Nursery Fair fills 6 halls of the Conference Centre, and this year will feature more than 180 exhibitors. Chiggs doesn’t have  an exhibition stand this year, but if you would like any trade information,  and a wholesale price for Chiggs Wheels, we have a trade enquiry form on the Chiggs website, or you can email us info@chiggs.co.uk and we will be delighted to send details of our patented new baby cards and medicine timers!

Always popular is the free drinks reception straight after the show on Monday! A good chance for a catch-up, chat and networking for both exhibitors and visitors, the After Show Drinks Reception (sponsored by Progressive Preschool magazine) will take place in the beautiful Royal Hall  from 6pm until 8pm. I know the free drinks will be the big draw, but it really will be worth attending to take in the splendour of the Royal Hall!

There is also a programme of seminars this year. Topics are:-

Are parents fitting child car seats correctly?

Will parents spend more in 2015?

Grandparents – are they your target customer?

Savvy social media & digital marketing for nursery stores

The online journey to becoming a Mum.

Latest requirements affecting the nursery industry.

Seminars are free to attend, and are in Hall H.

Harrogate International Nursery Fair runs from 29th to the 31st of March 2015 at Harrogate International Centre on King’s Road. Don’t forget, the clocks go forward one hour early on Sunday morning, so we lose an hour – don’t be late for the first day of the show!

#SBS winners event

Sunday, February 15th, 2015

On Friday January the 30th I went to Birmingham to attend the Small Business Sunday winners event. I’ve mentioned #SBS before, back in November 2010 when Chiggs had the great honour to be chosen for a retweet on Twitter by entrepeneur and former dragon, Theo Paphitis. Chiggs SBS badge

Small Business Sunday continues, and has grown and grown since Chiggs was a winner- now businesses can tweet their details to Theo every Sunday Evening between  5 – 7.30pm,  and he retwees his favourite 6 companies on Monday evening at 8pm. As you can imagine, there are a lot of winners now, enough for an entire networking event to be organised! There have been 2 previous events, but I was unable to attend them due to childcare issues so I was really thrilled to be able to make this one!

Small Business Sunday sbs event photo

What an inspiring day it was! Theo gave a talk in the morning and there was a question and answer session in the afternoon.

SBS event Q and A _H1R9255

I was able to finally pick up my winners certificate- the only disappointment of the day was that the queue to have a photo taken with your certificate and with Theo himself was so long that I ran out of time before I had to head back up to North Yorkshire to take over childcare duties from my husband before he headed off to work a night shift- once again the perils of running a business around a family!! Ah, well, never mind- this photo shows the closest I was able to get to Mr Paphitis….
