Saturday, October 1st, 2016

Saturday, the 1st of October 2016, has been designated as ‘Buy British Day’.
The hashtag #BuyBritishDay will be used to promote products Made in the UK, and lots of British-made brands will be supporting the occasion and offering special discounts.

As you know, Chiggs Wheels are very proudly printed and hand finished in the UK, so to celebrate Buy British Day we will be offering a 10% discount on purchases made on the Chiggs online shop. There is, of course, a magic word… and the word is “Harrogate”. Just pop it in the ‘promotional code’ box at the checkout page, and 10% will magically disappear from the cost of your order 🙂

Harrogate Home and Gift (Buyers’ Festival) is open for business!

Sunday, July 17th, 2016

Today is the first day of the Harrogate Home and Gift trade fair, which runs until Wednesday the 20th of July.

The trade fair has been given a new name, and is now the Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival, possibly with a nod to the fun atmosphere Harrogate provides, which helps it stand out from other trade events and makes it so popular with both exhibitors and visitors!

Yes, there is plenty of Yorkshire Tea drunk, but the Pimms bar is also incredibly popular 🙂 . There are four product trails to follow around the trade fair, the Eco Trail, Best of British Trail, New Product Trail and Christmas Trail.

We’re not exhibiting at the Buyers’ festival, an exhibitors stand is a little out of our price range (as they say in Yorkshire “‘Ow Much?!”), and if you can’t make the trade fair either but would like to discover some fabulous British made greeting cards and gifts for yourself, have a look at the trade and wholesale page on the Chiggs website, and get in touch with us!

The Great Northern Retail Forum takes place over three days of the fair (Sunday to Tuesday) with a line-up of retail experts and speakers offering various talks in The Forum next to Hall D.

Cie Carabossa Fire Gardens

Friday, June 24th, 2016

Last night Chiglet and I went to a spectacular display in the Valley Gardens, in Harrogate. Part of the Harrogate International Festival (co-comissioned by the Yorkshire Festival) the Fire Garden was created by a French company Carabosse.

We were absolutely entranced! We got there at around 9pm and the fires were lit from around 9.15, and as dusk approached and the darkness encroached upon the remains of the daylight the fire installations seemed to brighten and intensify. (Yes, I know, rather arty-fart talk for Chiggs, but the whole magical experience affects you like that!)

Lighting the fires

I find fire rather mesmerising, and the mixture of large installations and many many small ones (like the flaming flowerpots lining the paths) was spectacular. The smell of incense combined with the scents of the Garden flowers, and with the heat of the flames and ethereal music it really did touch all the senses.

Cie Carabosse is also on this evening (Friday 24th of June) and tomorrow (25th of June) and I urge you to visit if you can. At £3 for adults and £1 for children our magical evening cost us a mere £4… as we say in Yorkshire, that, lad, is a reet bargain!

Harrogate Nursery Fair 2015

Saturday, March 28th, 2015

Harrogate Nursery Fair starts tomorrow, and weather-wise it looks set to be a wild one! It will have been an interesting set-up day today in the gale force winds we have experienced.

Harrogate International Nursery Fair fills 6 halls of the Conference Centre, and this year will feature more than 180 exhibitors. Chiggs doesn’t have  an exhibition stand this year, but if you would like any trade information,  and a wholesale price for Chiggs Wheels, we have a trade enquiry form on the Chiggs website, or you can email us info@chiggs.co.uk and we will be delighted to send details of our patented new baby cards and medicine timers!

Chiggs Baby Wheels

Always popular is the free drinks reception straight after the show on Monday! A good chance for a catch-up, chat and networking for both exhibitors and visitors, the After Show Drinks Reception (sponsored by Progressive Preschool magazine) will take place in the beautiful Royal Hall  from 6pm until 8pm. I know the free drinks will be the big draw, but it really will be worth attending to take in the splendour of the Royal Hall!

HIC nursery fair

There is also a programme of seminars this year. Topics are:-

Are parents fitting child car seats correctly?

Will parents spend more in 2015?

Grandparents – are they your target customer?

Savvy social media & digital marketing for nursery stores

The online journey to becoming a Mum.

Latest requirements affecting the nursery industry.

Seminars are free to attend, and are in Hall H.

Harrogate International Nursery Fair runs from 29th to the 31st of March 2015 at Harrogate International Centre on King’s Road. Don’t forget, the clocks go forward one hour early on Sunday morning, so we lose an hour – don’t be late for the first day of the show!

#SBS winners event

Sunday, February 15th, 2015

On Friday January the 30th I went to Birmingham to attend the Small Business Sunday winners event. I’ve mentioned #SBS before, back in November 2010 when Chiggs had the great honour to be chosen for a retweet on Twitter by entrepeneur and former dragon, Theo Paphitis. Chiggs SBS badge

Small Business Sunday continues, and has grown and grown since Chiggs was a winner- now businesses can tweet their details to Theo every Sunday Evening between  5 – 7.30pm,  and he retwees his favourite 6 companies on Monday evening at 8pm. As you can imagine, there are a lot of winners now, enough for an entire networking event to be organised! There have been 2 previous events, but I was unable to attend them due to childcare issues so I was really thrilled to be able to make this one!

What an inspiring day it was! Theo gave a talk in the morning and there was a question and answer session in the afternoon.

I was able to finally pick up my winners certificate- the only disappointment of the day was that the queue to have a photo taken with your certificate and with Theo himself was so long that I ran out of time before I had to head back up to North Yorkshire to take over childcare duties from my husband before he headed off to work a night shift- once again the perils of running a business around a family!! Ah, well, never mind- this photo shows the closest I was able to get to Mr Paphitis….

Small Business Saturday

Friday, December 5th, 2014

You may have heard that tomorrow is the second annual Small Business Saturday. “And what may that be, exactly?” I hear you ask. Well, taken from the website www.smallbusinesssaturdayuk.com :-

“Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-political, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities. The day itself takes place on the first shopping Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses.”

Baby Feed Wheels

The ‘non political’ aspect hasn’t prevented the politicians getting involved, as indeed they should for a campaign of this sort that will hopefully be beneficial to local economies. There is even a Christmas Market with little wooden huts and stalls manned by small businesses outside Downing Street in London!

In a statement, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said “Last year, Small Business Saturday generated around £468 million. Together, we can top that. There are special events taking place all over the country – backed by cross party support and organisations like the Federation of Small Businesses, Young Enterprise, The Prince’s Trust and others.

So, good luck to all of the UK businesses throwing open their doors on Small Business Saturday and every success for the future.

On Saturday 6 December when you are shopping for Christmas or something you need – choose small, choose local.”

Baby Medicine Wheel

As I have mentioned before, here at Chiggs we are passionate about supporting small businesses,  (well, we are a small business!) and shopping local. So, we urge you this Saturday to buy a Baby Feed Wheel, a Baby Medicine Wheel or a Get Well Wheel: if not directly from Chiggs, then from one of our wonderful, supportive stockists– we have small businesses all over the UK and online who sell Chiggs Wheels!

National Thinking of You Week

Thursday, September 18th, 2014

The GCA (Greeting Card Association) has launched a new special week to highlight the emotional power of sending and receiving greeting cards- and it’s happening soon!

National Thinking of You Week has the aim of spreading a little bit of love and happiness across the nation by getting everyone to send a card a day during the week of 22-28th of September 2014.

To get involved you just have to send seven cards during this week, and encourage friends, family and colleagues to do the same.

Cards don’t have to be posted! You can give them in person or pop one through a neighbours letter box. The GCA points out that it has been scientifically proven that receiving a handwritten card makes people feel much more special than getting a text or email.

So, if you know someone who has just found out they are expecting a baby (looking at you, Your Majesty!) send them a lemon Baby Feed Wheel from Chiggs.

Maybe a friend or relative has just had a baby? A blue or pink Baby Feed Wheel would be a lovely card to congratulate them with (or both if it’s twins!)

Or you may know someone who is a bit under the weather at the moment- maybe they have a cold coming on- give them a Get Well Wheel and you’re not only letting them know you are thinking of them, but they can even use the card to keep a track of their Beechams!

Pop into one of our stockists, buy a Chiggs Wheel, write a little message on the back and spread a little happiness next week! Look out for photos and events posted on Facebook and Twitter with hashtags #ThinkingOfYou, and #KeepBritainHappy

Home & Gift Harrogate

Thursday, June 19th, 2014

July is on it’s way, and that means the Home and Gift 2014 trade show will be hitting Chiggs’s home town of Harrogate.

Home & Gift is a huge event, it takes up all the Halls in the Harrogate International Conference Centre, the Cairn Hotel (with marquees in the grounds) and the Majestic hotel with a number of enormous marquees covering their gardens, too. It covers so much of the town centre, that there is a free shuttle bus running around all the venues.

Organised by Clarion Events, Home & Gift Harrogate features hundreds of exhibitors (over 1,000!) who produce, wholesale or import a variety of products:- design-led and everyday gifts, homewares, jewellery & fashion accessories and greetings & stationery.

Retailers (both with bricks and mortar shops, and those who operate on line web based stores) attend the show looking to buy new lines for their shops, or visit current suppliers to renew old acquaintances and see if there are new products on offer.

Chiggs is not exhibiting at the event, although we are very happy to meet any retailers attending the show to demonstrate our new baby cards, parenting products and Get Well Soon cards over a coffee (or even a Pimms in  the Pimms tent!). Wholesale and trade information is available on the Chiggs website, and there is a trade enquiry form to request the trade price, or any other information.

Although Home & Gift is a serious buying event in any retailer’s calendar, there are various social events during the show, too- there is no escaping from football, as the World Cup Final will be shown on Sunday the 13th of July, after the very civilised sounding ‘Sunday Sun-downer’  event at 6pm the same evening.

Monday the 14th of July sees a pub quiz held at the Cairn Hotel, and the last evening during the show is marked with a  party night at the Revolution Bar.

The show preview popped through the Chiggs postbox a few days ago, and we were delighted to see that local Chiggs stockist Pots 2 Go get a mention in the Harrogate feature- ‘Shopping in the Montpellier Quarter’

Opening Hours

Sunday 13 July 09:00 – 18:00
Monday 14 July 09:00 – 18:00
Tuesday 15 July 09:00 – 18:00
Wednesday 16 July 09:00 – 16:00

the Tour de Bunting for Le Tour de France!

Sunday, February 9th, 2014

I’ve mentioned before that Chiggs is very lucky to be based in the beautiful North Yorkshire town of Harrogate, and this year we have some added excitement as the  Tour de France cycle race is coming to the Harrogate district.

Yes, I know it sounds a bit bizarre that an iconic French cycle race will be whizzing around the Yorkshire dales, but while the Tour de France bicycle race is primarily held in France, it also occasionally makes passes through nearby countries- and this year it will be coming to Yorkshire!

Harrogate is hosting the final stage of the first day of the “Grand Départ” on the 5th of July, and the race passes through the district again on the 6th of July. In what can only be described as a truly British idea to celebrate the cycling extravaganza, Harrogate Borough Council have launched “Le Tour de Bunting “.

They have appealed to local groups, organisations and individuals to knit little woollen jerseys to represent the colour and shape of the riders’ shirts. These will be made into bunting, and used to decorate the district in the build-up to and after the event. It’s an ambitious project; the aim is to produce over 3000 knitted jerseys!

Here at Chiggs we love projects like this, so I have dusted off my knitting needles, and I’m teaching Chiglet the basics. The colours of the shirts are bright yellow, bright green, white and polka dot (white with red dots)

Le Tour de BuntingWe have chosen to knit an iconic ‘yellow jersey’, (I’m purling and Chiglet is doing the knit rows), and I have to say it’s going surprisingly well!  We have completed one little woolly jersey, and are well on the way to finishing our second. I’ll be the first to admit, it’s not perfect- we have an odd ridge on the back of our finished jersey (I think I knitted when I should have purled!) but I’m sure when the finished knitted bunting is in place and fluttering in the balmy North Yorkshire breeze above the streets of Harrogate no-one will notice!

We can’t wait for the event now, it will be lovely to look at the finished ‘Tour de Bunting’ and to think “we helped make that”
