Today marks the start of Real Nappy Week in the UK, which this year runs from the 15th to the 21st of April. Real Nappy Week is an annual event aiming to promote the use of real (ie not disposable) nappies. There are lots of promotional events, nappuccinos*, demonstrations and competitions run by real nappy manufacturers and retailers.
Benefits of real nappies are both financial and environmental- over the course of babyhood, it’s cheaper to use reusable nappies than disposable. Goreal.org (the real nappy information service) calculates that a starter kit with all the nappies a baby will need can cost as little as £80, and adding £1 per week for washing costs means there’s still a saving of £500 compared to branded disposable nappies.
Environmentally, there are apparently c 3million disposable nappies thrown away every year in the UK, and 90% of those will go to landfill. A baby will use around 4,000 disposable nappies between birth and potty training, so parents can make a big reduction in the amount of nappy waste going into landfill by using cloth nappies.
* (in case you were wondering, a Nappuccino is an event where Mums and Mums-to-be can pop along for a coffee and a chat about real nappies- find out all about them, ask questions, and there’s often a cloth nappy demonstration!).
There is even a real nappy week ‘clothopoly’ game with lots of prizes- you can collect letters from various websites, unjumble the anagram to find a phrase for the main prize (worth £500), and there are lots of other prizes to enter for along the way (the total prize fund is £9,000!)
Cloth nappies can even be included in nappy cakes, one of Chiggs stockists, Hello Baby Gifts was recently asked to make a ‘nappy-less’ real nappy cake which was really well received by the parents- Nikki who runs Hello Baby Gifts says she loves coming up with new ideas when these challenges come her way!

I’ve taken Chiggs Wheels on the road this week- a large local Harrogate business runs occasional ‘markets’ so their staff can browse and buy in their lunch hour. There are all sorts of local businesses in attendance- jewellery, greeting cards, the local Molton Brown shop has a stand and this time a lady was selling Easter bunny jumpers, too!
I’ve attended a couple of times before- we weren’t outside this time thankfully (it was snowing!)- and it’s always an enjoyable event. I like getting out and about, chatting to people and getting feedback about our products. One of the first ladies to visit the market came over to say that she’d bought a Baby Feed Wheel for her nephew at a previous market, and he said that it was the most useful thing they were bought- made my day!
Another lady was interested in the Baby Feed Wheel and made the comment that “surely baby tells you when they are hungry” Ah, well, that’s the point, I explained- they don’t! Babies cry because they are hungry, tired, cold, hot, need a nappy change- or are just that way out! The first thing most Mums and Dads do to narrow down the options is recall when the last feed was. If it was 40 minutes ago, try something else like a nappy change- if it was 3 hours ago, baby is most likely hungry. And that’s what the Baby Feed Wheel is for!

Tomorrow is the opening day of the biggest trade fair in the Nursery Industry’s calendar, The Harrogate Nursery Fair at the International Conference Centre, Harrogate. Chiggs is fortunate to be based in the beautiful spa town of Harrogate, with Chiggs HQ being a mere mile up the road from the conference Centre- how convenient!
Although spring has officially sprung, someone forgot to tell Mother Nature, and we seem to be in the grip of a new ice age in North Yorkshire at the moment! It snowed pretty much all day yesterday, and as I type this on Saturday morning the snow is still coming down accompanied by strong gusts of wind…brrrr!
The picture here is of our road- so you can see the volume of snow that has fallen on Harrogate in the last few hours! The local roads in the area are very difficult, but the main roads in town are mostly clear. Some of our lovely Chiggs Wheels resellers are drying off after the ‘summer’ and getting ready to head out and about to various Fairs, Fayres and markets in the coming weeks- here’s a selection!
Baby Blessed will be attending a Baby Fair at the Colne Valley Garden Centre (Scar Lane, Golcar, HD3 4QA Huddersfield) on Sunday, 28 October 2012 10.30 – 15.00. there’s all sorts going on, a bonny baby competition, infant massage demonstration, kids zumba as well as lovely baby goods like Chiggs Wheels to buy!
Sue who runs Bottoms Up! (what a great name!) will be taking a selection of nappy cakes, Baby Feed Wheels and Christmas gift ideas to Kirkstall Abbey Market at Kirkstall in Leeds on Sunday the 28th of October (12 ’til 3)
Little Pj’s are very busy as usual, attending a host of events! My mother-in-law bought my daughter one of their gorgeous nighties last Christmas, and it’s beautifully made and so so pretty, so I can thoroughly recommend visiting their stand to make a purchase if you’re visiting one of these events!

Here are some events coming up in July due to be attended by a variety of Chiggs stockists and their Chiggs Wheels!
Piglet’s Boutique will have a stall on Thursday the 5th of July at the Pocklington Ladies Night, to be held at Woldgate School from 7:30-9:00pm. There are lots of different stallholders, and even a licenced bar- sounds very civilised!
Bella ‘n’ Bob will have a stall displaying their toys, games and accessories for babies, (Chiggs Wheels included!) at the Gledhow Primary School Summer Fayre on Saturday the 7th of July (1.30 to 4pm)
Little Pjs are a Yorkshire based business specialising in baby and children’s clothes, nightwear, accessories and new baby gifts (including Chiggs Wheels), and will have a stand showcasing all their lovely goodies at the Yorkshire agricultural event of the year- the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate at the Yorkshire Showground, on the 10th, 11th and 12th of July. If you are attending, look out for Ros in the WiRE (Women in Rural Enterprize) tent.
It’s a busy month for Little Pj’s, as they will also be in the WiRE marquee at the Newport Show at Chetwynd Deer Park on Saturday the 14th of July.

We have some events coming up in the month of May due to be attended by a variety of Chiggs stockists and their Chiggs Wheels!
Piglet’s Boutique has a stall displaying their baby gifts and gifts for mum, (Chiggs Wheels included!) at the Ladies Night being held at Market Weighton Social Club, East Yorkshire, on Wednesday the 9th of May. Tickets are £3 and include a drink- bargain!
Hello Baby Gifts will be attending the local produce and craft market at The Carfax, Horsham, West Sussex on Saturday the 12th of May and Saturday the 26th of May. Hello Baby also make up bespoke baby baskets and nappy cakes, so get in touch if you have any specific requirements.
ABF The Soldier’s Charity Spring Fair is to be held at Tennants Auctioneers in Leyburn,Wensleydale, North Yorkshire on Thursday the 17th of May and Little Pjs will have a stall selling their gorgeous nightwear and gifts including Chiggs Wheels. Little PJ’s will also be attending the Great Yorkshire Show here in Harrogate in July, but don’t worry, I’ll remind you nearer the time!

Once again, Chiggs Wheels stockists are out and about in the run up to Christmas, and here are some more festive events.
Friday 2nd December, Hello Baby Gifts will be at the Pavilions in the Park, Hurst road, Horsham, West Sussex
Piglet’s Boutique will be selling their lovely gifts for little ones at a Christmas Fair in Hull at the David Lloyd Leisure Centre on Saturday the 3rd of December (10am til 4pm)
Durham City’s traditional Christmas Festival is on Friday 2nd December: 10am – 6pm, Saturday 3rd December: 9am – 5pm and Sunday 4th December: 10am – 4:30pm. There is huge craft and gift marquee on Palace Green featuring over 180 stalls selling a wide variety of Christmas gift ideas, and Little Pjs will be selling their lovely nightwear and gifts including Chiggs Wheels, (perfect gifts for parents of December babies!) for the 3 days of the festival.
On the 11th of December, Lulabells will be at Cockermouth Market, in Cumbria with their lovely selection of gifts.
And the 15th of December is the 6th birthday of Chiggs! We’re not sure what the celebrations will involve- mainly cake and jelly, I suspect- so watch this space

As we are all gearing up for Christmas there are some rather exciting shopping events and baby fairs to attend during November, and here is a little sample of places you’ll be able to find Chiggs Wheels in the run up to the festive season…
